Walk Today? [Jul. 25th, 2008|01:21 pm]
Davis Square Ramblers

Hey, it's not raining!

To celebrate that, I'd like to go for a nice walk sometime later today. I'm in Teele Square so would prefer to start from here, but can be at least a little flexible. I can show you one of my 5K routes along the Mystic or we can get a little more urban. We can also stop in at a couple (yes, two!) beer/wine tastings along the way if timing works out. Go out and party with smug satisfaction after.

Anyone interested? I'm posting here instead of my personal LJ (or even just calling people) to try to see if this works. (Yes, I know it's last-minute. I'm walking no matter what and will do so with a non-member if needed. :)

[Edit: We're meeting at 6:15 in front of Kirkland Cleaners on Broadway near Teele if anyone else wants to join up. Or call me if you have my number.]

Hi everybody! I posted on Davis Square a few days ago about jogging with other people, and there was a huge response. So I figured that maybe we could all resurrect this page and be happy joggers together? I am planning on going for a light jog (with perhaps some walking involved) with "brianbos" later on this evening, around 6:30. I think we are meeting in the square and going from there. If anyone reads this, you are welcome to come along!

Any of y'all registered yet? I'm gonna run the course this weekend; I'm nervous about the big hill (on Central Ave).

Coupon for Marathon Sports [Sep. 19th, 2006|06:09 pm]
Davis Square Ramblers

Might any of you have a coupon for Marathon Sports that you won't use before it expires? I had one for 20% off but it went missing. Wah. I desperately need new running shoes and while they're the best place to buy (imho), they're also a bit pricy.

I'm not a Davis-ite (Winter Hill, represent!), but I thought I'd share some of my walks, too, since I am huge on the walking (not so much yet with the running, though I'm trying).

Winter Hill to Harvard: Broadway->Central->Somerville Ave->Park Street->(cross Beacon St. into Cambridge)->Bryant St.->Francis Ave.->Kirkland St.->Harvard Yard

Winter Hill to Union Square: Broadway->Walnut Street! God bless Walnut Street. A couple of weeks ago, I walked from my house to Union->Inman->Central->MIT->Esplanade->Longfellow Bridge->Kendall Sq. Now THAT was fun :-)

Quiet walks to various places [Sep. 12th, 2006|12:57 pm]
Davis Square Ramblers

Here are some walking routes I like, leading from Davis Square to various places. All of them take quiet, low-traffic streets as much as possible:

Davis to Harvard (1): Orchard Street, Davenport Street, Elm Street, Mossland Street, Oxford Street, Harvard Yard

Davis to Harvard (2): Dover Street, Hollis Street, Yerxa Road*, Pemberton Street, Sherman Street, Garden Street, Cambridge Common

Davis to Fresh Pond: Dover Street, Hollis Street, Yerxa Road*, Pemberton Street, Sherman Street, enter Danehy Park, walk all the way through the park to the other exit, left on New Street to Concord Avenue, cross Concord Avenue at signalized crosswalk, leading to path around the pond

Davis to Winter Hill (where my synagogue is): Community Path to end at Cedar Street, Alpine Street, Princeton Street, Lowell Street Bridge, Vernon Street, Central Street

Davis to Union Square: Summer Street is quiet and pretty, though hilly.

Davis to St. Paul's Cemetery in East Arlington: Seven Hills Park to Linear Park (bike path) to Mass. Ave., go three blocks on Mass. Ave., right on Clarendon, left on path through the middle of a senior-citizen apartment complex, right on Churchill Avenue, left on Matignon Road, walk through the Matignon High School grounds to an open gate at the corner of Hooker and Endicott, take Hooker to Woodstock to a signalized crosswalk across Route 16, continue across the small bridge over Alewife Brook to the cemetery entrance. The cemetery is beautiful and generally unappreciated.

* When the Yerxa Road pedestrian underpass reopens, hopefully sometime this year, some of these routes can be changed, to go down Raymond Street or through the Walden Square apartment complex.

Nice resource... [Sep. 12th, 2006|12:06 pm]

Not sure if everyone has seen this, but RunningMap.com proved to be an invaluable resource while looking at routes to run.

Nice, simple, and does exactly what I would want it to do.

(I am in no way affiliated with the site, just a happy user).

A 5K Route [Sep. 12th, 2006|10:59 am]
Davis Square Ramblers

An excuse for a first post. Welcome!

My most common 5K route is stolen from the Somerville Striders' Thursday night run. Theirs starts heading north from the VFW in Teele and I start either in Davis or Powderhouse since it's closer to home, but it's a good route either way, or in reverse.

Starting from Davis:
- Holland St into Teele
- Left onto Broadway
- Right onto North St
- Right onto Powderhouse Blvd
- Through the Rotary onto Broadway
- Right onto Cedar St
- Right onto the Bike Path
- Bike Path to bus-only street into the Square

(Boy, it feels so short when I type it.)
